Memories of summer

Lady of the flies

This is one of those shots that needs to be seen bigger to get the most from the tonal qualities of the image.

Xmas Nightmare Part 2

Someone hates us enough to give this recorder to my daughter for a Christmas present. The noise she makes can be heard anywhere in the house...

Chocolate

This little girl was at my daughters birthday party. Initially the image wasn't usable because of the inordinate amount of chocolate ice cream around her face. So with the aid of a PhotoShop generated wet wipe I cleaned her up.

Future son-in-law?

This is one of the candidates who could become my five year old daughters husband.Taken at her fifth birthday party, this cheeky little chap is one of her favorites.

Brothers

These two young boys are brothers. I didn't want to capture them with a standard studio shot, ie. both looking the same. So I went for two completely different looks and styles.

The top most image shows the younger one. He has fantastic eyes, so I captured him straight on looking directly into the camera.

For his older (and cooler) brother I went for something much moodier.

Portal Soft Wear

Shot this the other night as she stood in the doorway.
The key light is actually behind her in the lounge, and I used the white door to reflect the light back onto her face.

Draughts

This was taken ages ago on the old fish docks.
It was actually taken in black and white, then scanned and hand coloured.
I added the yellow wall colour to add some depth to the image. I chose red as the colour of the dress because thats what it was originally. (No imagination!) See also In the Frame

Flexible Friend

I wanted to show something about my friend that described her rather than just a standard portrait shot.
She has always been supple and energetic, so I wanted to capture the essence of her flexibility rather than just her beauty.
We tried a few different positions, but in this shot I like the way that her arms created the triangular frame.

Seaside Glamour

This was a last minute shot taken just before midnight.

Not sure what inspired us to scramble around preparing the image (other than the many glasses of sangria), but it works quite well.

Shot on my trusty old 18-55mm lens while I stood on the sides of the bath.

How I didn't fall in and kill us both I have no idea!

The eyes have it...

This little angel had the prettiest dark brown eyes, and I really wanted to capture the way they sparkled.
Because they were so dark, I knew they would be tricky to light. However, as soon as I got my act together she really came to life.

I tried so many combinations of lighting that I cant remember what this shot consisted of, but I can assume from the reflection in her eyes that the window was behind me.
She chastised me for calling the little puppet she was holding a rat. Apparently its a cat called Jess, and its been with her for as very long time. In fact, its so well 'loved' that its almost as bald as me!

Freckles

This is the daughter of a friend and I captured this shot of during a family trip to the local beach.

Her hair isn't just red - its RED, and I like the way that it has been blown round her face, which in this instance adds to photo rather than detracts from it.

Just used the the sand to reflect light back into her face.
It was taken quickly from a safe distance using my 70-300mm (she was a redhead with an ample supply of rocks) - hence the natural expression.

Secure

I try to find interesting places to shoot and this was an old water pumping station near the coast.

Taken on Ilford FP4 using my Minolta and scanned.
I have added a mask and a couple of saturation layers to create the glow.

The light was coming in from the window just out of shot on the right, with the concrete floor filling in.
The wind was also blowing in from the window on the right making their hair and costumes blow around.

The old building also had a huge empty underground water tank, but I couldn't persuade them to go down there!
